North Carolina History Lesson Plans from the Southern Appalachian Archives

During the 2015-2016 academic year, Mars Hill University Instructor of History Pauline Johnson was chosen as the Hart-Melvin Archival Research Fellow. Mrs. Johnson's project saw her use collections from the Southern Appalachian Archives to develop learning modules, activities, and teaching materials that can be used both at Mars Hill University as well as in other classrooms and schools. Working alongside former student Roman Blevins, Mars Hill University Class of 2016, Mrs. Johnson created 11 lessons that coincided with the 11 historical eras of North Carolina, as laid out in the Learn NC Digital North Carolina History Textbook. These 11 units are:

  1. Precolonial
  2. Colonial
  3. Revolution
  4. Early National
  5. Antebellum
  6. Civil War
  7. New South
  8. Early 20th Century
  9. Depression and War
  10. Postwar
  11. Recent

You will find the lessons that Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Blevins have created here on the following pages. Feel free to adopt these into your classroom materials along with the supporting items and artifacts.
