This is a bill of sale for an enslaved woman named Jane, her eighteen-month-old son Ben, and her one-week-old daughter Harriet Jane for the price of $1,260. The sale transfers the family to Edward Carter from the possession of William Keith deceased, with the approval of his son J.A. Keith on November 9, 1853.

For and in consideration
Of the sum of twelve hundred sixty dollars
I have this day bargained and sold unto
Edward Carter his Executors & Administrators and
assigns the following named negros to wit
Jane aged about twenty four years Ben aged
about Eighteen months and her infant child child
to wit (Jane’s) aged one week named Hariet Jane
upon the terms as Set forth in the articles of the sale
(or a credit of twelve months) this day made, belonging
to the estate of the late William Keith deceased
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand
And Seal this the 9th day of November A.D. 1853
