<text>The Old Churchyard

Oh come, come with me to the old church yard
I well know the path thru the soft, green sward.
Friends slumber there we were wont to regard
and we'll trace out their names in the old church yard.

Oh mourn not for them, their grief is o'er
weep not for them, they weep no more.
For deep in their sleep, tho cold and hard
their pillows may be in the old church yard.

I know it seems vain when friends depart
to breath kind words to a broken heart.
I know that the joys of life seem marred
when we follow their steps to the old church yard.

But were I at rest beneath yon tree
's why should you weep dear friends for me?
s' I am wayworn and sad, oh why then retard
the rest that I seek in the old church yard?

It's our friends linger there in the sweet repose
released from the worlds sad bereavements and woes.
And where should I rest with the friends they regard?
in the quietude sweet in the old church yard.
or (and who would not rest)

s' We'll rest in the hope of that bright day
when beauty shall spring from the prisons of clay
When Gabriel's voice and the trump of the Lord
shall awaken the dead in the old churchyard.

[second page of song]:
The Old Church yard 2

s' oh weep not for me for I'm anxious to go
to that heavenly rest where no tears ever flow.
s' fear not to enter that dark, lonely ward
for soon I shall rise from the old church yard.

Yes soon I shall join that heavenly band
of glorified souls at my Saviours right hand.
Forever to dwell in bright mansions prepared
for saints who shall rise from the old church yard.

I was working on this notebook in October, 1980 and had written the words to the "Old Churchyard" when a few days later my cousin Janette McMillon called to tell me that Maw Maw had died. She was in the Maryville, Tennessee hospital when while going to the bathroom she fell in the floor. A blood clot set up and in a few minutes she had a heart attack. She was crying "the bees are stinging." It was the pain in her left arm which I'm sure in Maw Maws mind she thought se was being stung. It seems ironic that this happened just after I had written this song, for it was her favorite of all the meeting house songs. They asked me to sing at her funeral but I could [not?]. This is February 28, 1984 and the memory of Maw Maw is still so sweet and sad that I often feel like crying.</text>

Best time to make jelly is during full moon.

Take apples and wash in cold water two or three times in case they've been sprayed much.

Cut apples down to the core. The bruised spots are alright to use. Cut off bad places.

Put apples in a vessel and pour hot water up to a little over top of apples.

Turn on high and turn down in a while. Stir to get top on the bottom (to get well cooked). Cook till apples are done. Let cool. Stir while cooling if you want to.

Strain thru colander till all juice is in a vessel. Then strain again thru a sack (old time flour sack) mashing what pummies and chaff is left from the first straining. (The juice needs to be fairly pure.)

Take a dry glass and measure how many it takes, then measure the same amount of sugar and put it in the juice which is now in the vessel you'll cook in. Stir the sugar which is in the juice before

[reverse]:
placing over the fire.

Turn on high if using electric stove. When it starts to boil and foam if it gets too high in the pan turn heat down till the foam gets lower so it won't boil over then turn heat back up and and use spoon to go around top of foam so it won't come over. Don't stir the juice. Sometimes the foam will go down when its about ready to come off. You can dip spoon and let some drip off and about tell if its thick enough. According to how many apples have been used it might take thirty minutes or less. Before cooking set glasses you will use for jelly beside the pan so that they will be fairly hot when jelly is ready. Put a spoon in each glass before pouring hot jelly so it won't break. Let jelly get cool before closing lid.</text>

              <text>Aunt Lou Brookshire

Lula Holsclaw Brookshire was born into a bootlegging, singing family on Duck Creek, near Draco in Caldwell County. Her father and uncle sang many old songs and when she was young her and her sisters would sing the old ballads while on the look out for revenuers. Her sister Mary who knew most of the older ballads died several years ago, yet Aunt Lou as we call her was one of the most singing persons I ever knew. Only a year or so ago she had a stroke which paralyzed her left side so she'll never pluck an instrument again. In 1933 she won a great banjo pickers contest in Washington State. She's one of the singing Holy Rollers that ever lived. Besides being a folk singer, she is a poet and composer in her own right. Her brother Henry wrote two songs years ago which were eventually published in N.C. Folklore "Blockaders Trail" (which had an erroneous history of Henry) and a fragment of another composition of his about the 1916 flood in the Brushy Mts. He also wrote of the death of Florence Sutphin a girl murdered by Charlie Walker near the Lower Creek community on Highway 90 (the murderer was 1st cousin to the father of a girl I once went with). But Lou remembers many songs she heard as a child such as "The Little Mohee," "The Wreck of Old Ninety-Seven" (which she learned from her uncle in the 1st ten years of this century, being the longest, truest version I've found). "The Golden Willow Tree," "Three Little Boys," "Jews Daughter," "Gypsy Davy-O"

[second page of entry]:
She remembers part of "Edward" known as "Blood On Your Shirtsleeve," but adamantly declares there is a verse before the usual beginning "How come that blood on your shirtsleeve." She thought the tune to it was one way & decided it went to something else. It was the tune of the Yancey County version of "Fair Ellender" but she doesn't know that song, yet remembers a snatch of
"He took her by the lily white hand
And led her from the Hall.
And with his sword cut off her head
And kicked it against the wall."
She remembered the 1st verse of "Jimmy Randolf" ("Lord Randall")
"Oh where've you been rambling Jimmy
Randolf my son. Oh where've you been a
rambling my handsome young one
I've been to the wildwood, mother
make my bed soon, for I'm weary with
hunting and want to lie down."
I believe she must have known two versions at one time of "Sailor Boy" for at different times I've heard her sing certain stanzas 2 ways, coming up with an inconsistency when confusing the two. One: "Oh no kind miss, he sails not here. He got drowned in the deep I fear." "Oh no he does not sail with me. For he got drowned in the deep blue sea."

She also knows scores of American folk songs, hymns, and cowboy songs which she learned over many journeys and staying all over the West and in California. Mrs. Brookshire has composed many songs and poems of her own.

represented in the N.C. Folklore. Although I'm sure written in good faith, the article was erroneous in several details. His birth date was not 1878 as stated in the article, but 1891 on Duck Creek near Draco in Caldwell County in the Brushy Mts., not Dutch Creek. The details of the arrest were not erroneous altho the reason for the arrest was true. Although Mr. Holsclaw is a very upright, kind and religious man, in those days he was a blockader. At that time money was hard to come by and when stilling had to have a federal stamp and be taxed, the poor man could not afford the price and make a living. Bootlegging wasn't considered a shady trade in those days. Those who didn't sot themselves kept whisky for medicinal purposes and after Prohibition they couldn't even get it from the government. Many made their own, but for the public as a whole it had to come from somewhere.

In the song, it wasn't a Taylor man, but a Naylor man concerned in the incident. In those days Mr. Holsclaw also wrote of the murder of Florence Sutphin and the ballad of Gladys Kincaid which took place in Lenoir and not Burke Co. (wrong--place was at Valmead beside Lenoir on the Blowing Rock road) but is not the version printed in N.C. F. Strangely enough ballads pop up from unlikely people. Rolf Ellison from Pottertown has known Mr. Holsclaws song and it is known in the mts of Watauga County. The N.C. Folklore version is evidently someones adaptation of name into a common folk lyrics showing how murders and incidents become so quickly diffused into folk tradition. Many people around Kings Creek still remember the 1916 flood and how many people were washed away and the family lost in the fresh, the subject of Mr. Holsclaws song which is still remembered.</text>

My parents all treated me kindly
For they had no child but me
My mind began to ramble
On this we couldn't agree
My mind began to ramble
And oh what grieves me so
Is to leave my aged parents
Their face to see no more.

There was a rich old gentleman
He lived in a town close by
He had one only daughter
On whom I cast my eye.

I told her my intention
was far across the main
I asked her if she'd prove true to me
till I returned again
She said she'd prove true to me
if death didn't prove unkind
So we kissed shook hands and parted
and I left my girl behind.

I went over on Broadway
I met the driver there
He handed me a letter

He handed me a letter
Which gave me to good understand
That the girl I left behind me
Had married another man.

Mrs. Walter Phillips

He said poor boy don't cry
As I stood there a grieving
He said poor boy don't cry
Oh money I have plenty
and it's for you and I.

My horses I'll turn over
My company I'll resign
We'll ramble the world over
For the girl you left behind.</text>

And it's all for the love of thee.

On the banks of sweet Relief.

Aunt Lou Brookshire

I have seven ships on the ocean wide
All a sailing for dry land
Three hundred and fifty jolly young men
They're all at your command.

She picked up her sweet little babe
And kisses she gave it three
Saying stay at home with your papa dear
And keep him company.

They had not been on the ship two weeks
I'm sure it was not three
Till she lamented in her lovers arms
And she cried most bitterly.

They had not been on ship three weeks
I'm sure it was not four
Till they sprang a leak in the lovers boat
And it sank for to rise no more.

I heard some fair maiden
Give a pitiful sound
And it sounded so lonesome
In the waters around.

I never will marry
Nor be no man's wife
I expect to live single
All the days of my life.

My love's gone and left me
The one I adore
He's gone where I never
Shall see him no more.

The shells in the ocean
Will be my death bed
While fish in deep water
Swim over my head.

She plunged her fair body
In the waters so deep
And she closed her blue eyes
In the waters to sleep.

              <text>The Little Mohee

As I was out walking for pleasure one day
In sweet recreation to while time away
As I sat amusing myself on the grass
No one should come near me but a fair Indian lass.

She sat down beside me and taking my hand
Saying you are a stranger and in a strange land
But if you will follow, you're welcome to come
And dwell in the cottage I call my home.

The sun was fast sinking far o'er the salt sea
As I wandered away with my pretty Mohee
Together we wandered together we roved
Till we came to a hut in a coconut grove.

As this kind expression she made unto me
If you will consent sir to stay here with me
And go no more roaming far o'er the salt sea
I'll teach you the language of the pretty Mohee

Oh no my fair maiden that never could be
For I have a true love in my own country
And I cannot forsake her I know she loves me
Her heart is as true as the pretty Mohee.

So early one morning one morning in May
When to this fair maiden these words I did say
I'm going to leave you so farewell my dear
My ship sails a-spreading and home I must steer.

The last time I saw her she stood on the sand
and as my boat passed her she waved me her hand
Saying dear when you've landed on your own
native shore
Just think of the Mohee in the coconut
grove.

[verso]:
Mrs. Lou Brookshire
March 1968

And when I had landed on my own native shore
With friends and relations around me once more
I looked all around but none could I see
That I could compare with my pretty Mohee.

The girl I had trusted proved untrue to me
So I'll turn my course backward far o'er
the salt sea.
I'll turn my course backward
far o'er the salt sea
I'll spend all my days
with my pretty Mohee.</text>
