Jan 21 1862
Dear parents I have the opportunity to write a few lines to you i am well and hope that this may find you all enjoying the same pleasure i have just come off of picket we are ordered to cook three days provisions we will go on a scout of three days we will start tomorrow morning.[p.2] It is reported our men fighting [Goli__?] at the gap [word missing] thinks that [w_?] going their [J_?] brigade is [under?] martching orders and ready to move at any moment it is cloudy and drizzling rain once and awhile today it is as muddy as ever the river is very but falling now [p.3] I will not seal this letter till morning then i will let you know whether we go on the scout remaining yours L. Bryant

We have not gone on that yet i don't believe that we will go. last night the secesh come up to that little town where the fight commenced and burnt the station [p.4] their they threatened it just before you come here the soldiers is in the greatest excitement about the with [Golicoffer?] we are throwing up our streets like they was at camp husier i am on guard this morning but i will not have to stay on after night i must bring my letter to a close
